Applying Kunzea Concentrated Massage Oil to a knee

Most massage oils are built to slide. This one is built to grip.

Almost every massage oil on the shelf is designed for long, flowing strokes, so it is formulated to stay slick on the surface for as long as possible. That is exactly wrong for the work most people actually want to do at home: finding the knot in a shoulder or calf and holding pressure on it. Slip is the enemy of pressure. This oil absorbs instead, so your thumb stays where you put it.

How to work a trigger point at home

1

Find the point, not the area

Press slowly around the sore region with a thumb or knuckle until you find the spot that is noticeably tighter and more tender than the tissue beside it. That band is what you are working, and it is often not where the ache seems to be.

2

Two to four drops, then hold

Put the drops directly on the point and work them in with small, slow circles. Then hold steady pressure for 30 to 60 seconds and breathe. You want a firm ache you could rate about a 6 or 7 out of 10, never sharp pain.

3

Follow with the cream

Once the point releases, go over the surrounding muscle with Kunzea Pain Relief Cream so the whole area is covered rather than the single spot. Repeat one to three times a day as required.

General guidance for self-massage, not a treatment plan. Do not work directly on bruises, broken skin, a fresh injury or anything a practitioner has told you to leave alone. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.

What’s inside

Six botanicals, four of them Australian natives.

This is where the formulation stops looking like a massage oil and starts looking like a Zea Relief product. Alongside Tasmanian Kunzea sit three more Australian natives that almost never appear in a massage oil, plus German Chamomile and Ginger.

The base is chosen to absorb rather than sit on the surface: Macadamia, Fractionated Coconut and Sunflower oils. Everything marked on the label with an asterisk is Australian grown.

Read about Kunzea oil

Kunzea Oil Australian native

Kunzea ambigua, plantation-farmed as well as wild harvested in Tasmania. The active every Zea Relief product is built around, and the lead oil here.

Nerolina Australian native

Melaleuca quinquenervia. A close relative of tea tree with a softer, sweeter profile, included to extend and round out the Kunzea.

Australian Sandalwood Australian native

Santalum spicatum. A deep, grounding oil that is prized in aromatherapy and rarely used at this kind of concentration in a massage product.

Lemon Myrtle Australian native

Backhousia citriodora. The brightest note in the blend, and the reason the oil smells clean rather than medicinal.

German Chamomile

A long-standing botanical for calming and comfort, included as an extract to soothe the skin you are working on.

Ginger

Warming and circulation-supporting, which is what gives the oil its gentle heat under sustained pressure.

Where people reach for it

Shoulder knots

The band between shoulder blade and spine that never lets go.

Calves

Tight calves after running, standing or a long flight.

Neck

The base of the skull and along the top of the shoulders.

Lower back

Either side of the spine, worked with the thumbs.

Feet and arches

Rolled underfoot at the end of a long day.

Forearms and elbows

For gripping work, keyboards and racquet sports.

Hips and glutes

Deeper tissue that a cream cannot reach into.

Practitioner use

Remedial and sports therapists use it for point work.

Working Kunzea Concentrated Massage Oil into a hand

The one we made for the hard cases.

Zea began in 2016 as a family market stall in Tasmania, and the cream came first. This oil came later, from customers and remedial therapists who wanted something more concentrated for one stubborn spot rather than something to spread over an arm. It is still the strongest formulation we make, and we are Australia’s only Certified B Corporation in natural pain relief.

Questions, answered

What is Kunzea Concentrated Massage Oil?

It is the strongest formulation in the Zea Relief range: a highly concentrated massage oil designed for trigger point therapy, deep tissue remedial massage and localised areas of discomfort. You apply it to the specific spot rather than over a whole limb.

How do I use it?

Apply 2 to 4 drops to the area 1 to 3 times per day, or as required, rubbing gently in a circular motion until absorbed. For larger areas, follow up with Kunzea Pain Relief Cream. Patch test before first use.

What makes it different from an ordinary massage oil?

Two things. It absorbs instead of staying slick, so your grip holds when you hold pressure on a point, and it carries six active botanicals including four Australian natives rather than being a carrier oil with fragrance added.

Should I use the oil or the cream?

Use the oil on the specific spot, and the cream for everyday application over a larger area. Most of our customers use both: the oil first on the point, then the cream over the surrounding muscle.

Is it greasy or strongly scented?

No. It is deliberately non-greasy and absorbs readily, with a mild scent that comes from the oils themselves rather than added fragrance, so you can use it during the day without residue.

How long does a 30mL bottle last?

Longer than most people expect, because a single application is only 2 to 4 drops. Used once a day on one area, a bottle typically lasts a couple of months.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It is formulated for all skin types and is free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulphates and petrochemicals. Because it is concentrated, patch test before first use and discontinue if irritation occurs.

Do practitioners use it?

Yes. Remedial and sports therapists use it for point work, which is what it was built around. It is also available under NDIS arrangements.
