Patchouli is steam distilled from the leaves of Pogostemon cablin, a bushy member of the mint family. It looks nothing like a mint and smells nothing like one: the aroma is deep, earthy, sweet and woody, and it sits at the very base of a blend. It is one of the most-used fixatives in perfumery for exactly that reason.
From bush to bottle
Pogostemon cablin is in the Lamiaceae family alongside mint, lavender and rosemary, but it grows as a dense leafy bush in tropical shade and humidity. Indonesia is the largest producer, and the plant is cut several times a year once established.
Unlike most oils, patchouli leaf is not distilled fresh. The leaves are dried and lightly fermented first, which breaks down the cell walls and lets the heavier constituents come out. Skip that step and the yield collapses.
Patchouli's aromatic molecules are heavy sesquiterpenes, which means they come off the still late and slowly. The run is long by design. Nothing is added afterwards and every batch is GC/MS tested.
The standard advice with essential oils is to use them before the lighter constituents oxidise and the aroma flattens. Citrus oils are the clearest example: leave one open and it loses its top note within a year or two.
Patchouli works the other way. Its profile is dominated by heavy sesquiterpenes and patchoulol, molecules far less volatile and far more stable than the monoterpenes that make citrus fragile. Over years, a stored bottle loses its raw green harshness and settles into something smoother and sweeter. Perfumers age it deliberately. It is the one bottle in the cabinet you do not need to rush.

Patchouli wants warmth, humidity and partial shade, which is why Indonesia dominates production. It is a smallholder crop as much as a plantation one, cut several times a year and dried on site before the leaf ever reaches a still.
