Kanuka Essential Oil 10mL
Kanuka is Kunzea ericoides, the close relative of the Kunzea ambigua that Zea has built its range around. Same genus, different species, and a noticeably different oil: sweet, fresh and herbaceous where Kunzea ambigua is deep and foresty. If you already know one, the other is the obvious next bottle.

Kanuka is steam distilled from the leaves of Kunzea ericoides, sometimes called white tea tree. The species name means heath-like, after its fine needle foliage. It carries small white flowers with dark centres, held in clusters along reddish stems, and it sits in the Myrtaceae family alongside eucalyptus, tea tree and its better-known cousin Kunzea ambigua.
From bush to bottle
Kunzea ericoides is one of those plants that colonises disturbed and marginal ground first, holding the soil while slower species establish behind it. It wants poor soil and full sun and takes neither fertiliser nor irrigation. Zea's is grown in New South Wales.
The harvest takes the fine leaf material, which is where the oil is held. Because the species reshoots readily from cut stems, harvesting works as a pruning cycle and the same stand keeps producing rather than being cleared.
Steam passes through the leaf, lifts the volatile oil, and the two are condensed and separated. Nothing is added and nothing is taken out. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis.
Kunzea ambigua and Kunzea ericoides are different species in the same genus. Zea's hero oil is Kunzea ambigua, from Tasmania, and it is deep, foresty and grounding. Kanuka is Kunzea ericoides and reads sweeter, fresher and more herbaceous, with a lighter top.
The naming gets muddier still because kanuka is also a New Zealand common name, and because Kunzea ericoides was for a long time lumped together with several closely related plants before being separated out. The practical point is simple: if a label says only kunzea or only kanuka, it is not telling you enough. The species name is what matters, and Zea's is stated on every bottle.
Quality and testing
Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The full constituent breakdown is held on the batch certificate rather than published here, because the ranges shift with each season and harvest.
Kunzea ericoides is a coloniser. It establishes on cleared, burnt and marginal country ahead of slower species, holding soil and providing cover while a landscape recovers. That toughness is why it wants nothing from a grower beyond poor soil and sunlight.

Ways to use it
3 to 6 drops in a diffuser or oil burner. The simplest way in.
Kanuka blends with the eucalyptus oils and with other Australian natives such as Kunzea, Lavender and Rosalina.
One or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch test first.
One drop inhaled from a tissue when you want the aroma on the move.
A few drops in water instead of a synthetic air freshener.
Well dispersed in a carrier or with bath salts, never neat on water.
A few drops in a homemade surface spray as a fresh deodoriser.

Questions, answered
A 100% pure essential oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Kunzea ericoides in New South Wales. It is single origin and GC/MS tested.
Sweet, fresh and herbaceous, with a lighter top than Kunzea ambigua. It sits as a top note in a blend rather than a base.
Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first.
Same genus, different species. Zea's hero oil is Kunzea ambigua from Tasmania. Kanuka is Kunzea ericoides from New South Wales. They smell clearly different, and the species name is the only reliable way to tell them apart on a label.
Not closely. Manuka is Leptospermum scoparium, a different genus. The two names are often paired because both plants are prominent in New Zealand, but botanically they are separate.
No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil and never take one internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first, and patch test.
Yes. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis, which is how the specifications on this page are established.
Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Check with your vet before diffusing around pets.
Below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap on firmly. The lighter constituents are always the first to escape.
