Black Spruce Essential Oil 10mL
Black Spruce is distilled from the needles and branches of Picea mariana, the defining conifer of the Canadian boreal forest. It grows on cold, waterlogged, acidic ground that defeats most trees, and stays small and slow because of it. The oil is crisp, resinous and unmistakably forest.

Black Spruce is steam distilled from the needles and branches of Picea mariana. It is the most widespread conifer in the North American boreal forest, and one of the hardiest trees anywhere: it tolerates bogs, permafrost and acidic peat that would kill most conifers. The aroma is fresh, crisp and earthy with clear forest undertones.
From bush to bottle
Picea mariana grows across the Canadian boreal on ground other conifers cannot use: waterlogged peat bogs, acidic soil and shallow permafrost. It grows slowly and stays narrow, which is a survival strategy rather than a defect.
The harvest takes needles and the fine branches with them, which is where the oil sits. Conifer foliage holds its oil well after cutting, unlike some soft herbs that must reach the still the same day.
Steam passes through the needle material and lifts the volatile oil with it. Nothing is added afterwards. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis.
They get used interchangeably in conversation and they should not be. Spruce is Picea, pine is Pinus, fir is Abies. Three different genera, three different needle structures and three different oils, all of which get described loosely as pine.
Black Spruce specifically is prized among the conifers for how clean it reads. Where some pines are heavy and turpentine-like, Picea mariana is crisp and slightly sweet, with an earthy base underneath. It is the conifer note people usually mean when they say a room smells like forest rather than like floor cleaner.
Quality and testing
Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The full constituent breakdown sits on the batch certificate rather than here, because the ranges shift with each season and harvest.
The Canadian boreal is one of the largest intact forests on earth, and Picea mariana is its defining species. Cold, wet, acidic and slow. A tree that takes a century to reach a size a plantation eucalypt would manage in fifteen years produces a very different oil.

Picea mariana is a boreal conifer and does not grow here. Zea sources it from Canada and says so on the bottle rather than substituting an Australian species and calling it spruce.
