Grown and distilled in New South Wales

A tea tree that smells like lavender. That combination barely exists anywhere else.

Rosalina Essential Oil 10mL

Rosalina is distilled from Melaleuca ericifolia, a close relative of tea tree. But where tea tree is led by terpinen-4-ol and smells sharply medicinal, Rosalina is 40 to 43% linalool, the same soft floral compound that gives lavender much of its character. It is often the oil people reach for when they find both tea tree and lavender too much.

What Rosalina actually is.

Rosalina is steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca ericifolia, sometimes called swamp paperbark or northern rosalina. The species name means heath-leaved, after its fine needle foliage. It sits in the same genus as tea tree, which is why it shares some of the same cleansing character, and in the same family as eucalyptus and kunzea. Zea's is grown on Biripi land in New South Wales.

From bush to bottle

Step one · grown

Swamp country, coastal thickets

Melaleuca ericifolia forms dense thickets in swampy coastal ground across south-eastern Australia. It suckers readily from the roots, so a single plant can spread into a stand, which is why it is so often found as a solid wall of fine grey-green foliage rather than as scattered trees.

Step two · harvested

Fine leaf, cut to reshoot

The harvest takes the leaf. Because the species reshoots so willingly from cut stems, harvesting is a pruning operation rather than a clearing one, and the same stand can be cut repeatedly over many years.

Step three · distilled

Steam distilled, nothing added

Steam passes through the leaf, lifts the volatile oil, and the two are condensed and separated. Nothing is added afterwards. Every batch is GC/MS tested, which is where the linalool and cineole figures on this page come from.

Melaleuca ericifolia foliage, the source of the linalool-rich oil

Same genus as tea tree, opposite personality.

Tea tree is Melaleuca alternifolia and it is defined by terpinen-4-ol, typically 30 to 48% of the oil. That compound is what gives tea tree its assertive, unmistakably medicinal smell. Rosalina is Melaleuca ericifolia, and it carries terpinen-4-ol at only 3 to 4%.

What fills the gap is linalool, at 40 to 43%. Linalool is one of the main constituents of lavender, and it reads as soft, floral and calming. Underneath it sits 1,8-cineole at 17 to 19%, which brings a gentle clearing note without the camphor punch of eucalyptus. The result is an oil that behaves like a melaleuca but smells like something much gentler, which is exactly why it suits bedrooms and children's spaces where tea tree would be overwhelming.

Quality and testing

What “100% pure” actually means on this bottle.

Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The physical specifications shown are the supplier's published figures for this oil; natural oils vary between batches, which is exactly why each one is tested rather than assumed.

A misty paperbark grove in coastal south-eastern Australia

It grows in thickets, in the wet ground behind the coast.

Melaleuca ericifolia belongs to the swampy coastal country of south-eastern Australia, and Zea's comes from Biripi land in New South Wales. It suckers from the roots and forms dense stands rather than open woodland, which is how a single plant becomes a thicket you cannot walk through.

Ways to use it

Diffuse it

3 to 6 drops in a diffuser or oil burner. The simplest way in.

Blend it

Rosalina blends with citrus, floral, wood and herbaceous oils. Kunzea and Eucalyptus are the usual partners.

Diluted on skin

One or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch test first.

On a tissue

One drop inhaled from a tissue when you want the aroma on the move.

Room and linen mist

A few drops in water instead of a synthetic air freshener.

In the bath

Well dispersed in a carrier or with bath salts, never neat on water.

Natural cleaning

A few drops in a homemade surface spray as a fresh deodoriser.

Overnight diffusing

Gentle enough to run through the night in a ventilated room.

Using it safely

  • For external use only. Never apply undiluted, and never take it internally.
  • Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact, and patch test first.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your health practitioner first.
  • Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Store below 30°C, out of direct sunlight.

Questions, answered

What is Rosalina Essential Oil?

A 100% pure essential oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca ericifolia in New South Wales. It is single origin and GC/MS tested, and runs 40 to 43% linalool.

What does it smell like?

A fresh, earthy, gentle lavender aroma with mild eucalyptus and tea tree behind it. Much softer than either tea tree or lavender on their own.

How do I use it?

Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first.

Is Rosalina the same as tea tree?

Same genus, different species and a very different oil. Tea tree is Melaleuca alternifolia, led by terpinen-4-ol at 30 to 48%. Rosalina is Melaleuca ericifolia and carries terpinen-4-ol at only 3 to 4%, with linalool at 40 to 43% instead.

Why do people use it instead of lavender?

Because it is softer. Lavender is a strong, sweet floral that some people find overpowering. Rosalina carries the same lead compound, linalool, but sits it over a light eucalypt base, which reads as fresher and less sweet.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil and never take one internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first, and patch test.

Is it tested?

Yes. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis, which is how the specifications on this page are established.

Is it safe around children and pets?

Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Check with your vet before diffusing around pets.

How should I store it?

Below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap on firmly. The lighter constituents are always the first to escape.
