How to Make Your Own Massage Oil Blend

Michelle Brass |

Creating your own massage oil gives you the freedom to tailor every blend to how you're feeling. Whether you're looking to soothe tired muscles, unwind before bed, lift your mood or simply enjoy a relaxing massage, you can choose the essential oils that work best for you.

It's also a simple way to know exactly what you're putting on your skin. By combining a quality carrier oil with carefully chosen essential oils, you can create personalised blends using ingredients you know and trust.

In this guide, we'll cover the basics of choosing a carrier oil, understanding safe dilution rates and creating easy massage oil blends for different everyday needs.

Why Use a Carrier Oil for Your Blend

Essential oils are highly concentrated and are never meant to go on skin undiluted. A carrier oil does exactly what its name suggests; it "carries" the essential oil safely across the skin, spreading it evenly, slowing absorption, and protecting against irritation that pure essential oils can cause.

For massage specifically, the carrier oil also does a lot of the physical work. It's what gives your hands glide, what stops a massage from turning into a friction rub, and what determines whether the finished blend feels heavy and greasy or light and easy to work with.

Zea's Unscented Massage Carrier Oil was built with this in mind. It's a light, water-dispersible blend of three nourishing plant oils; Macadamia, Sunflower, and Fractionated Coconut oils -  non-greasy, fragrance-free, and gentle enough for sensitive skin. Because it has no scent of its own, it's a genuinely blank canvas: whatever essential oils you add will come through clearly, without competing with a background fragrance.

A few reasons it works well as a DIY base:

  • Nourishing and hydrating ingredients

  • Lightweight and quickly absorbed, so it won't leave skin or linens feeling oily

  • Water-dispersible, meaning it rinses cleanly from skin and towels

  • Fragrance-free, so it doesn't clash with whichever essential oils you choose

  • Gentle enough for sensitive skin and fragrance-free environments

  • Suitable for full-body massage or targeted, smaller areas

Getting the Dilution Right

This is the part worth taking seriously. Too much essential oil in a blend won't make it more effective, it just increases the risk of skin irritation. Too little, and you'll barely notice it's there. Here is some guidance for essential oil dilution in a carrier oil is a good starting point for any DIY blend:

  • General body massage (adults): 1–3% dilution, roughly 6–18 drops per 30mL of carrier oil

  • Sensitive skin: 0.5–1% dilution, roughly 3–6 drops per 30mL of carrier oil

  • Face use: 0.25–0.5% dilution, roughly 1–3 drops per 30mL of carrier oil

  • Bath use: 1% or less, mix 3–6 drops into a tablespoon (15mL) of carrier oil before adding to bath water

A few safety basics to keep in mind whatever blend you're making:

  • Always do a small patch test on the inside of your arm before applying a new blend more widely

  • Keep any blend for external use only, and avoid contact with eyes

  • If irritation occurs, stop using it and wash the area with a plain carrier oil (not water, which can spread the oil)

  • Some oils, like ginger and citrus oils, are best kept toward the lower end of the dilution range, since they're more likely to cause warmth or sensitivity in higher concentrations

  • When in doubt, check with your physician or a qualified aromatherapy practitioner, particularly during pregnancy or for use on children

Build Your Own Blend - By Purpose

Once you've got your carrier oil and your dilution sorted, blending becomes a matter of choosing the right essential oils for what you need. Here are five combinations to start with, each designed for different moments of need.

Soothe Tense Muscles

For tired muscles after activity, or simply a long day on your feet, try combining Kunzea, Peppermint, and Lavender:

Blend (40 drops total)

  • Kunzea: 20 drops
  • Peppermint: 10 drops
  • Lavender: 10 drops

Why these oils?

  • Kunzea: Zea's signature native essential oil, naturally containing terpenes including α-pinene, 1,8-cineole and viridiflorol. Together, these compounds are recognised for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, helping to ease muscle discomfort.

  • Peppermint: Well known for its natural cooling, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Traditionally used to help relieve muscular aches and pains, it also provides a refreshing sensation that helps revive both the body and mind.1

  • Lavender: Prized for its naturally calming and soothing properties. Traditionally used to help ease tension and promote relaxation, it encourages a sense of calm while helping to soothe tired muscles.

Use at the standard 1–3% dilution and massage into the area that needs it most - calves, shoulders, or lower back are common choices.

How to Massage the Blend In

The blend is only half the story, how you apply it matters too. A few simple techniques go a long way:

  • Warm a small amount of oil between your palms before applying, so it doesn't feel cold on contact

  • Use slow, firm strokes rather than quick, light ones, this is more comfortable and helps the oil glide evenly

  • Work from the outer areas in toward the centre of a muscle group

  • Focus on one area at a time rather than trying to cover too much at once

  • Reapply a small amount as needed rather than using too much oil upfront

Because Zea's Unscented Massage Carrier Oil is water-dispersible, it also rinses cleanly from skin and towels afterward, which makes it a practical option whether you're doing this at home or setting up a proper massage space.

Once you've built a blend you like, it's worth keeping a note of the ratio that worked for you, a small glass bottle with your go-to combination mixed and ready means you're never starting from scratch. And if you want a gentler base to experiment with essential oils for the first time, the Unscented Massage Carrier Oil is designed to be exactly that: a fragrance-free foundation that lets whichever oils you choose take centre stage.
