What is Kunzea Oil?
Kunzea Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the Tasmanian Kunzea plant. Scientifically classified as Kunzea ambigua, other common names include Tick Bush, Poverty Bush, Zea, Tasmanian Kunzea, White Kunzea, and White Cloud.
Regarded as one of Tasmania's best-kept natural secrets, Kunzea is a natural treasure when it comes to Australian Essential Oils. The plant is a member of the Myrtaceae (Myrtle) family and flourishes in the pristine wilderness of North-East Tasmania. It has a clean, fresh, invigorating aroma and it is the signature ingredient in all of Zea Relief Kunzea Products.

What are the therapeutic benefits of Kunzea Oil?
Despite being used by native cultures for centuries, the wide-ranging benefits of Australian Kunzea Oil have only begun to emerge. Kunzea Oil has various therapeutic benefits and uses.
In our blog post, Benefits of Australian Kunzea Oil, we cover 15 proven and potential uses of this unique Australian native essential oil.
Why haven't I heard of Kunzea Oil before now?
We hadn't heard of it either until we moved to Tasmania and started learning about it from locals. A naturopath and aromatherapist for 25+ years, our co-founder Michelle Brass was convinced of the remedial benefits of the Kunzea ambigua plant after using the pure essential oil on clients in her clinic. Repeated requests for the oil from her clients encouraged the Brass family to start investigating the full therapeutic potential of the Kunzea ambigua plant.
Also known as ‘tick bush’, the wild-growing plant is native to the cooler coastal regions of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, and grows profusely in the rugged climate of northeast Tasmania and the Bass Strait Islands. It is believed that Aboriginal communities traditionally used the Kunzea ambigua plant to relieve irritated skin, muscle tightness and pain.
The Brass family experimented with the pure essential oil for a number of years, until they developed a formulation that could be safely used on her clients to help relieve everyday physical ailments. The demonstrated effectiveness of Kunzea Oil has compelled the Brass family to launch their own commercial range of natural products, and thus Zea was born.
Have studies been conducted on Kunzea Oil?
In comparison to other essential oils, the medicinal potential of Kunzea Oil is still in its infancy. However, the combination of scientific studies, peer-reviewed research and anecdotal evidence suggests that there are several proven and promising therapeutic uses of Kunzea Oil.
This has lead to Kunzea Oil (AUST L 72143) being recognised for the following approved claims:
-
For the temporary relief of the pain of arthritis and rheumatism
-
Relief of the symptoms of influenza
-
Relief of muscular aches and pains
-
Helps relieve nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety
These are the allowable formal therapeutic claims that can be made in Australia. However, these and other therapeutic uses have been expanded on in our blog post here.
In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of studies conducted on Australian Kunzea Oil and the various components embedded in its unique organic structure.
It is our vision at Zea to unearth the full medicinal potential of this remarkable essential oil and use this understanding to positively impact the lives of millions of people throughout the world.
Can Kunzea Essential Oil be used undiluted on the skin?
Like most essential oils, we do not recommend using Kunzea Oil undiluted on the skin. For most people it will be okay, however, everyone's skin is unique and will have varying levels of tolerance and sensitivity to the constitutes embedded in the oil.
Also, the pure essential oil is highly concentrated, so applying it neat to the skin is simply a waste. Kunzea Pain Relief Products have been formulated for the intended purpose of using topically on the skin.
Are there any dangers/cautions I should be aware of when using Kunzea Oil?
The overall composition of Australian Kunzea Oil, with a low content of cineole, makes it a safe, non-toxic essential oil to use when diluted. There no known medical reason why Kunzea cannot be used during pregnancy if diluted, however, if you are uncertain please seek the advice of a healthcare practitioner.
As we recommend with all of our products, keep out of reach of children and consider testing a small amount on the inner forearm to test for adverse reactions before applying the product to the affected area. We do recommend that children using our products are over 6 months of age.
